Recognizing Signs From Those on the Other Side
One of the most common things I hear from clients and students is, “How do I know that my loved ones are trying to make contact with me?” Another similar question is, “Was that really them that I felt/sensed/heard?”
The answer is: YES!!!
Your loved ones on the Other Side want to make contact with you just as much as you want to make contact with them. This of it this way: Say you are an aunt or an uncle, and your niece or nephew lives on the other side of the globe from where you are located. Just because you are in two separate locations, it doesn’t mean that you don’t want to see them, right? You are simply in different places. So you learn new and different ways to communicate with them – phone, email, social media, and Skype or other forms of video chatting, for example.
When someone transitions from the Earth plane to the Other Side, they are not physically with us anymore, and each of us has to walk through our grieving process in our own time and in our own way to cope with that physical loss. But, the concept of communication is very similar to what I mentioned above. We still want to have contact with them, and they with us. We learn to connect with them – and, likewise, they learn to connect with us – in new and different ways. Are you following me so far?
So, the next question that often arises is, how do those on the Other Side communicate? There are several different ways, but here are a few general examples:
- Dreams: By far, dreams are the most common way those in Spirit communicate with us. Our conscious mind is “turned off” for the evening, so we can’t slip into the doubt, fear, or other emotions that may arise with a more direct form of communication. An important note here is that not very dream that you have with a loved one in Spirit is a message from them. IF they appear sick, angry, upset, or something other than peaceful and loving, that is usually your residual feelings/grief around their passing coming up in the dream, and not them trying to communicate with you. A communication dream is loving, peaceful, and often times very realistic.
- Smells and Tastes: Spirit Folks just LOVE to use our sense of smell and taste to say hello! Whether it is the familiar smell of a loved one’s perfume, flowers, or even the smell of cigarette smoke (when nobody around you is smoking), Spirit will often use our olfactory sense to let us know they are around. Similarly, you may be thinking how much you miss enjoying steaks on the grill with your uncle during the summers growing up, or your mom’s famous spaghetti sauce, when all of a sudden you could swear you were tasting those very things! This is not your imagination – this really is your loved one popping in for a visit.
- Music: Those on the Other Side love to use music as a way to bring through a message. Sometimes it’s hearing the words that dad used to say in a song on the radio as you turn on your car in the morning, other times it’s hearing the music you always used to enjoy listening to with your best friend. Music is a wonderful way of raising our vibration and feeling closer to Spirit . . . and they love using it to deliver you a message as much as you love listening to it!
- Numbers: Lastly, numbers are another big way in which those on the Other Side make an effort to connect with us. It can sometimes come in the form of seeing “angel numbers” – repetitive numbers such as 111,222, 333, etc. Other times, it can be seeing numbers connected to a loved one (such as their birthday, anniversary or the day that they passed) or their “lucky numbers” on a license plate or when you look at the clock. People always ask what the “meaning” is behind these numbers – I say that if you can’t think of specifically how they’d be connected to your loved one, sometimes it’s just them using a number you’d recognize or that would stand out, just to say “hello”.
As I’ve mentioned, these are only a few of the ways those in Spirit make contact with us. Perhaps you have your own – I’d love for you to share it in the comments!
Whatever way you receive signs, it is important to remember to say “thank you” when you do. After all, the more gratitude you show, I truly believe that the more signs you will receive.
I think I am being contacted. I’ve always experienced things that I dare not discuss with just anybody. I’m trying to get intouch with a … gift I’ve had since I was little. I want to … know the truth. Learn.
Victoria – I am sure you ARE being contacted! I say that if you really think and feel so in your heart . . . then you are! Trust and know in your heart that Spirit is trying to get through to you – and then perhaps journal your experiences. This will help you to become more confident in the messages you are receiving. 🙂
My adult son Jay took his life almost four years ago. We were very close. I called him “Bird” or “Jay Bird”.. Recently I was preparing for a shower and I moved to the mirror and a baby blue jay bird feather floated in front of me from no where. I felt so blessed. I miss him every day.

Feathers are also a sign. Different colors mean different things.
I think someone may be trying to contact me. I was in bed listening to classic country on my tv. Our alarm clock turns on and there is nothing but white noise and a high pitched sound. We only use our clock for the time because it is projected onto our ceiling. Is it possible that a loved one that has passed is trying to communicate?

Yes, I absolutely believe that could be a loved one from the Other Side saying hello! Clocks and electronics in general are an easy way for those in spirit to communicate because it is a way to use energy (electricity) to bring through a sign. 🙂 Sometimes the message is just a simple, “Hello,” or “Thinking of you” – whatever it is, just thank your loved one(s) for reaching out and connecting!
My mother recently passed away it was quick we found out in july she had cancer in august she was gone we lived together for 10 yrs she loved little frogs and butterflies the way my house is set up the bathroom is in the middle of the house with no window .In september there was a little frog in my bathroom and a couple days later a beautiful large monarch butterfly .what else could this be but a sign from my momma does it mean she is happy where she is now? I miss her so much
I just want to share my experienced regarding connection on the other side. I think I do have it after having my son. When I was 27 yo, I had this weird dream of a little boy, he was trying to wash his hand in the lavatory but he couldn’t reach it. I was watching him and I eventually helped him and washed his hands. As I held this little boy, I felt something he’s not different to me, just like related to me. When I woke up, I was asking myself who was the kid in my dream?
To make the story short. My question got answered. I got pregnant when I was 40 yo. My husband’s family, my family, and friends said my baby will be a girl. I told them, it’s gonna be a boy. So they asked me if the doctor told me already, I said no. I told them “I think I already met my son long time ago.” The night before the gender reveal my husband said he’s going to bit for baby girl for a $100, I told him okay. I actually convinced him that he’s going to win because our baby is gonna be a boy. While we were watching TV, I saw on the TV clock the 11:11 and I told myself that my baby is making connection to me and saying my guess is right. Yes, my baby is a boy.
Another time I had a dream, I think I was 28 yo. I’ve dream a little girl, I wasn’t holding her. I just watched her turning towards me, I don’t really know who she was and why I’m dreaming of her. So I was asking myself if those two kids are related. Last year, I’ve dreamed of a little girl, she was with a crowd but the people wasn’t facing her and she called my name. I swear all those dreams it’s still clear to my mind and I felt weird. I actually asking myself, if I’m going to have a daughter one day. Tonight I’m playing block puzzle and I swear I saw my score 666. According to the comments here repeating numbers are angel numbers, just like the number I saw the night before the gender reveal of my son. Let see what will happen next.

I am constantly seeing 11:11 when I look at a clock. This has been happening about 3-5 times/week which is way beyond the usual frequency and has been occurring for about 3-5 months now. What might this be?
well, to be frank this is also a way in which your deceased one is trying to contact you 11:11 is the time usually our spirits use to indicate their precense
My husband passed away June 2015 after a 2 years battle with cancer. I took care of him for the 2 years and was happy to have him with me. during this time we showed each other such raw love it was incredible. I miss him everyday now and long to know he is okay. I have found feathers and had a butterfly follow me and he smoked before he got sick and I could smell smoke shortly after he passed away. The only dreams I have had he was looking good both time but didn’t say anything. I just hope he is ok. Can you help me.

I love that your husband is giving you signs through the butterfly, the feathers, and the smell of smoke. Sometimes in visitation dreams, our loved ones don’t necessarily say anything, but they show themselves looking well so that you wake up KNOWING they are well and okay where they are. <3

My dad passed away March 19th , he had cancer for about a year , and he passed quietly in his sleep. I was asked by him to do his eulogy. I did so feeling pride and sadness. I wanted to use a poem to end the my celebration of his life but chose not to as I couldn’t find one that suited.
The morning after the service i was in bed , I awoke at 7 am , went to my study and began writing a poem about my dads life.
I finished it 5 minutes flat. I have never written one before. I sent an email to my brothers and sisters with Dads Poem. They were moved to tears.
Dad is interned until mid May at which time he will be buried.
I will read Dads Poem on that dad. I soundly believe my father visited me in my sleep and gave me ( us ) his final gift. A poem i will share with my family , and have mounted in frames for each of my siblings.

About 2 weeks ago I was flooded with random thoughts of my very first girlfriend and first love, and I mean flooded. That started on a Saturday, 5/21. The strong feelings and memories, and I swear the sound of her voice hung with me for the next three days. Mind you, we haven’t had any contact in 31 years. Finally, on Tues. the 24th of May I Googled her name and there it was, her obituary. She was buried on the 21st, the very day I became consumed of her memory. Needless to say I was and still am heartbroken and have been thanking her for her time with me and that I prayed that she was happy while she was here and that she is at peace where she is now. I still love her after al this time. I’m convinced she was reaching out to me but sometimes I just need to be sure.
To David:
I understand exactly what you are describing. When you love someone in the way that you loved her – and vice versa – that love does not die. Your message from her might very well have been to let you know that she never stopped loving you either. It is very real and I believe you are correct about your love contacting you in that way. I believe we do this often and sometimes without even realizing we are doing it. The other person receives your thoughts in a variety of ways. So the communication you have experienced takes place in this life and in the next – its just expressed in different ways….and maybe in a stronger way once we have crossed over.
I’m guessing you will see each other again someday.
Nurture and encourage that communication – its very real and a wonderful gift.
Thank you John for your words of encouragement. The healing process has become easier these days. I have no doubt that Lori is near from time to time, the contact is very real and it is a remarkable gift indeed. There have been others in my life that have presented themselves but none nowhere near as powerful as this. I’m well aware now that she has made a safe transition and that she is in the company of the Angels and out ancestors. In this life she had such a dynamic personality so it’s really not surprising that her energy would be so strong. It is a deeply personal relationship now and I thank her each time, as I do anyone that comes through. I feel that is of great importance to recognize a loved one when they go through such a great effort to make contact. Thanks to Jess as well for putting up this site and for her words. I believe you are right in that one day we will be reunited, I welcome that day when it is time but for now I will carry on and keep my heart open to my First Love.

i’ve always had dreams of my beloved hubby who left me in about a few months after our marriage he lost his life in a war ive had dreams and sensations of him holding my hands and sometimes a gentle kiss on my lips hope he’s with me even when i type these lines
i only get bad ones ..one was so bad i woke up.freezing with goose pimples all over my body .i left my partner a sleep and got up and put my coat on and made a hot drink ..it was as if i was there..i have had mad things all my life
I have dreamt I opened a door and Jesus with aside view to me was talking to a bunch of people around a table. I didn’t think Jesus saw me. I said to myself. I better close the door before He sees me. The next thought I had was forget the door ,He knows everything. Then from head to toe I had a great feeling that I cannot put into words.

A friend of the family and my dad made a packed to send each other a sign that they were present by sending lots of bugs for the other to see after they passed.my dad who is almost 90 yrs. stated that his friend gene is around she has been seeing a lot of bugs.he was admitted to hospital with pneumonia just presently.On my way home I asked gene if she had come to take my dad home to give me a sign. Within 3 seconds my car was engulfed with a swarm of bugs.Thankyou Gene.
So my dryer is broken so I have to go to my grandmothers to dry them. She is in alabama right now and I went back to get the clothes 50 minutes later and the laundry basket had a box of clothes and a bag full of tools thats so heavy. I left the basket empty on the wahser. My grandfather died about a year ago.
this pass October on the 13th I encountered a similar experience, I felt I was being watched in my own house, when no one was here . I took pictures at 4 in the morning
with my phone and I seen spirits on my bed and outside my bedroom door. and in my kids room. to this day no one believes me.
Earlier this year one of my close friends passed away,Last night I had a dream his funeral song (stand by me) kept replaying in my head, and that I swallowed a huge object in a way that felt like i was being strangled, which is weird because he hung himself.
Is he trying to reach out to me? Or is it something else.

The first sign I had from the other side was the smell of my step-fathers after shave in 1977. A very good friend of mine died of pancreatic cancer, at her funeral in the church walking along the top of my seat I saw a lady bug. When I got back to my teaching job in Sept., as I was walking through the door I herd her call my name, she had a very distinct voice so I know it was her. My husband died almost 2 years ago this September. We always said to each other, if I go first let me know if there is life after death, as I was writing his obit, my computer screen changed a nd on the Botton of the screen there was a man that said, there is life after death. I found 3 pennies in strange places. I have also felt his presence in my bedroom, that was the last time anything significant happened with him. One more thing, my mother died nd one night soon after she died I woke up to my name being called and seeing an outline of a face, I know it was my mother.
Good Morning,
This encounter was different than the usual visit someone should experience.
My wife and I were sitting in the living room just after 9 last night watching the series “9 perfect strangers”
We had our dog Louis with us.
It was still light outside so we had closed the curtains but they were open about a foot. We had the patio door curtains near the dining area open and the screen door open to let some air in. Calm and sunny outside.
As we watched this show, the character began talking about his som who had committed suicide. He spoke to the group of people at the supper table. His Daughter, Zoe and wife were there beside him also.
He was analyzing out load why his son took his life.
He said sometimes the young are impulsive and concluded that his son was quite impulsive so that factored in the suicide. As he spoke, I was thinking of my son who is 26 and has had bouts of suicide thoughts where I had to take him to hospital. My wife was sitting quietly while this scene continued.
The character spoke how sometimes these young people impulsively take pills etc and then realize that it was a stupid thing to do but it’s too late.
As the character wrapped up his talk,
Both Leah and I notice someone outside on the deck and then her daughter Zoe saying “no mom no!”
I was looking at the patio door because I heard the words and expected Zoe to walk in.
The weird part was the dog always knows when someone is outside and didn’t bark or go to the patio door.
Leah heard it too. She called out “Zoe!?!”
(Leah’s daughter Zoe had the same name as the characters daughter at the table. Coincidence..)
Both leah and I got up because no one came to door and no answer. We went to the patio and then outside.
Leah started calling Zoe. Her daughter Zoe lives with her dad who lives just a few blocks away and this was his week to have her. Zoe is 17.
Anyway, I immediately was confused and decided that the sounds must have come from the show. Leah said I don’t think so because I saw a shadow too.
I rewound the show and there was nothing that was said that confirmed what we heard.
So I went out the garage thinking maybe Zoe had taken off and I could see her.
I came back in still confused. Logically trying to make sense while leah is now calling her daughter to find out why she left like that. Leah called her dad who said she was at a friends.
Leah called the friends mother who gave leah her daughters number. Leah called and it turns out Zoe was with her friends. She lives about 20 minutes away in the city.
So I couldn’t figure out what happens so I decided once agai. To rewind the show but this time I would put on subtitles.
That didn’t work.
That’s when leah and I sat down and knew intuitively what just happened. This has never happened to us before.
It was very strange because the “spirit” who called out “no non no” was Zoe, her daughter who is still alive.
We always get synchronicity in our lives and know there’s another side but have never had such an experience.
So we sat and analyzed our view of what happened. Once we agreed we heard and felt the same thing, we began to process why it happened.
We considered the show and they topic.
Leah has had fears of Zoe dying. She feels that her impulse nature will lead to death at a young age.
I told her I had been thinking of my son but after this experience I decided to discuss that maybe it was a some kind of sign or wanting from a different timeline where Zoe
Came back to warn us about the suicide topic. Leah was very upset and I was a bit shaken too.
We don’t understand fully the whole thing amd why it happened while watching that scene.
It happened last night and I’m up her this morning and it’s still making me wonder why the spirit of Zoe, who is still alive,
Made such a powerful presence. Like I said, we get “messages” all the time that are obvious but never like this.
This was a very big event for Leah and I.
So we will update if anything happens.

My dad was very into music, there is not a time when I cannot remember him humming, singing & dancing to the beat of music. He even liked my music & his tastes evolved as the times changed. He loved jazz & passed away at home to an instrumental version of “fly like an eagle”, while wrapped in a quilt with eagles on it. I had a very vivid dream two nights later that he was having dinner with Freddie Mercury & David Bowie, & he was super excited to show me who he gets to hang out with now while “under pressure” played in my dream. We also took my dad to a tears for fears concert when he was getting one of his first cancer treatments, he felt awful but he went anyway & we had such a great time, I was pregnant & my daughter kicked & moved the entire time. Now all the time he plays the same tears for fears song for me. Every time I visit the cemetery it comes on, every time I drive his car it’s on, I just graduated law school – it came on, my kids even notice it so much now that they say it’s grandpa talking to them. It’s such a blessing but I still cry every time.
I see signs occasionally. One stuck out yesterday. Kinda blew my mind. It’s rare to see a vehicle as sign. But a man I loved, and still love snuck in specific type of car. This care is rare to see, as some of the more sports care are in the fall.
