Doing a New Dance

 In Blog, Life Lessons

doing_a_new_danceEveryone – even those of us who would like to believe that we are more “awake” or “enlightened” – tends at some point in our lives to get hooked into habits, behaviors, and beliefs that keep us trapped in certain ruts and patterns. The way I’ve heard my therapist describe it, it is a dance; and sometimes if we are used to doing one pattern, it can be a challenge to change it to a different dance.

As I wake up internally and become more aware of my thought patterns and habits (good, bad, or indifferent), I am changing the dance in all areas of my life. Although this is exciting in one aspect, it is also terrifying in some ways, and brings up a lot of emotions.

What will people think of me if I act differently and speak up?
What if I lose this relationship/long-held belief/experience?
Will I be okay with this change?
Who will I be without this person/place/situation in my life?

For someone like myself – who thrives on stability and fears change and uncertainty – this is a scary time, to undergo so many changes in the dance. However, I also know that if I am willing to take the steps and move through this, it will be truly worth the effort and energy. 🙂
